Those of us who share the name Harraghy in its various spellings know that many people have difficulty in both spelling and pronouncing our name.

The possibilities for different spellings of the name are almost endless, and indeed many variations have turned up in old records.

The following is a list of possible spellings. This list will double if we change the second letter in the name from "a" to "e"

Other variations are possible by placing "Mac", "Mc", or "O" in front of the name.

When you take into account that the name Geraghty and Heraughty have the same source, that could open a further range of possibilities.

And to add to the confusion Edward MacLysaght suggests that the name is connected to "Hore", "Harris", "Harrisson", etc. See our separate page

A number of the spelling variation of the names in the table below are separate names with no obvious recent connection to our own name. However the similarity in spelling and/or pronunciation leaves the possibility that some members of our branch of the family may have adopted one of the other similar names.

As mentioned in the History of the Name Page, most of the Co Donegal Harraghys whom we have traced in old records, have changed their name to Harvey.
