Open Petitions - Petition PE1296

Petition by Robert Thomson on behalf of LDN Now Scotland calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to make Low Dose Naltrexone readily available on the NHS to auto-immune disease sufferers as well as other conditions not classified as auto-immune such as HIV/AIDS, cancer and fertility, in each NHS board area thereby reducing the danger of sufferers having to access riskier alternatives and also incurring higher costs by purchasing the drug through private medical providers and to provide guidance to all GPs on LDN protocol and require them to collect LDN clinical data.

Written Questions for Petition 1296

PUBLIC PETITIONS COMMITTEE CONSIDERATION OF PE1296:
QUESTIONS ARISING FROM COMMITTEE MEETINGS

(See ‘Written submissions’ for responses)

TUESDAY 2 MARCH 2010—

Scottish Government—

  • Given that the vast majority of the respondents to the petition did not wish to take position on the virtues of LDN in the absence of clinical tests, will it make representations to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency asking it to assess the safety and efficacy of LDN? If not, why not?
  • Will it ask the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network and Scottish Medicines Consortium to produce guidance on the use of unlicensed LDN? If not, will it suggest it as a topic? If not, why not?
  • How many NHS prescriptions for LDN have been issued?
  • In what way will the planned guidance on a variety of medicines-related issues address the aim of the petitions?
  • In light of the submissions from Dr Bob Lawrence (PE1296/M) and Professor Jill Smith (PE1296/N) will it initiate a trial to measure the effectiveness of LDN and collect data?
  • Will it ask the Chief Scientist Office to fund research on LDN?
  • What is its answer to the points/question made in the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of the petitioner’s submission (PE1296/T)?

Department of Health—

  • What is your response to the issues raised in this petition and, in particular, as it would appear that the vast majority of the respondents to the petition did not wish to take position on the virtues of LDN in the absence of clinical tests, will you make representations to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency  asking it to assess the safety and efficacy of LDN? If not, why not?
