We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to use funds from the NHS budget to undergo trials for Low Dose Naltroxene. More details

Submitted by A Barnett – Deadline to sign up by: 23 November 2009 – Signatures: 13,028

It is necessary to commit public money to this activity because the drug Naltrexone is cheap, out of patent and therefore unable to attract drug company funding for trials. This drug is effective at halting the progress of all forms of multiple sclerosis, and even reversing some or much of the disabling damage. Being cheap, at under a pound a day, it would save the health service considerable money, with mainstream treatments currently in excess of 10,000 pounds a year per patient. Further to MS, Low Dose Naltrexone is also effective at treating other auto immune disorders, such as HIV/AIDS, Crohns Disease, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes, is known to be effective in treating Parkinsons disease and can stop 70% or cancers, even eliminating half of those, or 30% of all cancers. The potential for savings of NHS money run into many tens of billions of pounds per annum. Please help us persuade this government to fund the necessary trials. Only a government sponsored solution is possible.

Read the Government’s response     Monday 21 December 2009

All drugs need to be thoroughly tested to make sure they are safe enough to be made available to patients.  Most research of this kind is done by the pharmaceutical industry.  The Government is aware that occasionally there will be few or no commercial incentives for companies to fund clinical trials.

The Department of Health’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) supports the research most likely to bring benefits to patients and to the NHS.  High quality proposals for support into any aspect of human health are always welcome.  The NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme in particular is keen to receive suggestions for research topics in areas of market failure.  These can be sent through the open access form at: www.hta.ac.uk/suggest/index.shtml.

To date, no application has been received regarding low dose naltrexone.  Any application would be considered on its merits.

Current Position

No. 10 Downing St. has responded to the UK LDN Petition as per above. This response points the way forward towards the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and their Health Technology Health Assessment programme (NIHRTA) -   http://www.hta.ac.uk/

Andrew Barnett sent a proposal to NIHR TA in August 2009.

NIHRTA  discussed this proposal at their Panel Meeting on 19th Jan 2010. Outcome is awaited.

Andrew has also been in contact with Universities and Medical Professionals to encourage submission of a research application to NIHR.

He has also contacted No. 10 to clarify the protocol for responding to No. 10’s response.

I would like to see No. 10 take a more proactive approach by appointing a suitably qualified person to initially carry out some desk research into LDN, look at the clinical experience that already exists, and then we can see where that can lead us.

Dr Chris Steele, MBE, continues to support LDN Petitions as ambassador for LDNNow.

Andrew Barnett and Jayne Crocker met with the Prime Minister Gordon Browne on Saturday27th Feb 2009:

“.............Wednesday night we got a call from one of our MPs inviting us to meet the Secretary of State for Wales - Peter Hain. The security checks my
partner and I had to go through were unbelievable (similar to going to 10 Downing Street).

Well, it wasn't the Secretary of State for Wales, it was our PRIME MINISTER - Gordon Brown! Whilst I've had the pleasure of standing on the doorsteps
of 10 Downing St handing in the LDN petition with Dr Chris, Malcolm and Marion, we actually got time with our Prime Minister to talk about LDN. Our
MP had done a great job on briefing him about LDN, he was well aware of our LDNNow campaign and we sat in a room full of leading business people in our
local community. He himself having lost a daughter and a son who suffers from CFS understands only too well the battles we're facing. In the group
was a breast cancer specialist and was fascinated about LDN and OGF/ALA so we're going to work keep in touch with him.

However, the best news is Gordon (he insisted we call him Gordon and not Prime Minister) is going to really look into LDN and personally get back to
us.

We also gained a lot of media exposure - tv, radio as well as press. One reporter's colleague has MS and because of the difficulties he faces, they
allow him to work from home and she would love to do a documentary on the LDNNow campaign. Their company is about to buy HTV (ITV TV channel in the
UK). Dr Chris Steele MBE,  LDNNow's ambassador is with ITV so who knows what journey we're on here but I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.

It's been a great day and a wonderful surprise so thank you to our MP for arranging this. Now we're getting the attention LDN deserves and thanks to
all in this group for helping me on our way. Just hope I'm still alive this time next week - lol!
